Making every journey more sustainable – our green commitment

We are on our way to supplying 100% renewable energy at all Allego EV charging stations. This article explains where we are today and how the energy used for charging your EV at Allego is produced. You will learn how you, as an EV driver, are contributing to an emission-free future!

Charging ‘Allego green’

Allego is on its way to powering EVs with 100% locally produced renewable energy. Currently, 25% of the energy supplied by Allego chargers is being produced locally. To ensure this, we are closing Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with renewable energy suppliers. For those unfamiliar with PPAs, this is a contractual agreement between energy buyers and sellers. They agree to buy and sell an amount of energy that is or will be, generated by a renewable asset. For example, in November 2022, we signed our first PPA and now receive 25 gigawatt hours of renewable energy to support the majority of Allego’s operations in Germany. And recently, Klimaatfonds Nederland and us have signed a Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (CPPA) to purchase sustainably generated electricity from Zonnepark Adijk II. With this energy, we can charge around 2,000 electric vehicles daily via Allego charging stations. Our goal for the end of 2023 is to increase the share of locally produced renewable energy on our network to 80%, followed by 100% in 2024.

Certified green energy

In all other cases, Allego ensures that the energy is certified by Guarantee of Origin Certificates (GOs) provided by energy companies. GOs are renewable energy tracking certificates. They are quite important documents, as they are used to identify the type of technology used to produce one MWh of electricity. When one MWh of green electricity is produced, the producer receives one certificate. The certificate describes the attributes: the technology of production, which power plant the electricity comes from and other specifications. Allego ensures that the Certificates used come from wind and solar farms within the same country as the charging location, making sure to support national sustainable energy generation.

What the future holds

We’re as passionate about preserving our planet as you are. That’s why we’re committed to powering EVs with 100% renewable energy. We are working hard to reach our goal of generating the majority of our energy at a local level by the end of 2023, and working up to 100% after that. So that you can charge your EV with renewable energy wherever you go. Together, we can charge into a greener future!
