Düsseldorf: It’s going to be a green, green Christmas

It’s Christmas time again and Christmas markets are waiting for you! What is the best one to visit with your EV? Germany is famous for its wonderful Christmas markets, and Düsseldorf in Germany has no less than seven of them. All within walking distance of each other and all with a different theme, like the handicraft market and the Fairy Tale Market. A really big ice skating rink in the city center makes the winter experience complete. Read all the reasons to visit Düsseldorf this Christmas.

When you can’t wait to enjoy some marzipan, roasted chestnuts (Kastanien) and of course Glühwein, it’s time to visit a Christmas market. Practice singing some Christmas carols in German and get ready to buy great sustainable presents.

Handwerker Market

A must-see is the Handwerker Market where artisans present their handicrafts. Located in front of the Düsseldorf Rathaus (City Hall) where all kinds of handicrafts can be found. Here you can buy your handcrafted nativity scene in all kinds of forms and colours.

Want to practice first? Take a look at the Christmas carols songbook. During the day there are lots of activities for children here.

Electric mobility in Düsseldorf

During the Christmas season, it’s not a bad idea to park your EV a bit outside of the city, as all of the markets are in walking distance of each other. Also, the city will be very busy and it might be difficult to find a parking spot. One location that has fast chargers and is only half an hour to the inner city by public transport is located at Erkrath.

Allego Charging Station

Address: Mettmanner Straße. 25, 40699 Erkrath, Germany
Don’t feel like walking? The city provides green electric scooters called eddy. You can use them when you download the app.

Although the Christmas markets are great, it’s also nice to visit the rest of the city and its sustainable shops. These are our favorites.

Manko Cafe

Don’t feel like having any more glühwein and want to relax a bit? Try Manko cafe. A place where you can have a coffee, work or have some lunch. They support local produce and work together with the Good Cup, an initiative that supports cafes to have cups that people can return, be put in the dishwasher and eventually can be recycled.

Address: Hüttenstraße 76, Düsseldorf

Hotel

Have a nice sleep before you visit the market again? Don’t forget to book pretty early as Düsseldorf attracts lots of visitors around Christmas time. An environmentally friendly hotel can be found at Living Hotels. They have eliminated the use of plastic straws, only serve palm oil-free products at breakfast and all their electricity is green! There are two in Düsseldorf so you can choose between the Altstad (Living Hotel De Medici) and at Kirchfeldstraße (Living Hotel).

At Kirchfeldstraße parking is possible for €15,- a day and there’s a charging point at the hotel. The parking area is quite small and narrow so smaller cars would do better compared to bigger cars.
