Charging Speeds

We’re committed to enhancing your electric vehicle (EV) charging experience by offering a diverse range of charging solutions tailored to meet various needs and preferences.

In our Charging Fundamentals guide, we introduced the different types of charging plugs and their direct impact on charging speeds. Now, let’s delve deeper into the specific types of chargers Allego offers – from daily use solutions to ultra-fast charging options.

AC (Alternating Current) Chargers

Regular Chargers – up to 49 kW

These AC chargers also known as Regular Chargers are part of the options that Allego offers and can charge your vehicle at speeds of up to 49 kW.

Our Regular Chargers are an excellent choice for your daily charging needs. Whether it’s overnight charging or necessary top-ups throughout your day, these chargers are designed to balance speed with energy efficiency effectively.

They ensure your electric vehicle is always prepared for your next journey, providing reliable and convenient charging solution.

How to recognize these chargers?

Typically installed at street level in both small and large cities across Europe, Allego’s AC chargers are designed for ease of accessibility and user-friendliness. These chargers can be found in convenient locations on sidewalks, public parking areas, close to hotels and other attractions, near shopping centers and along popular commuting routes, ensuring that you can easily charge your EV wherever your travels take you.

Most of our Regular Chargers are not equipped with a digital screen, promoting a straightforward “tap and go” usage that simplifies the charging process. However, a select few do feature screens to provide interactive guidance or additional information.

To visually distinguish between screen-equipped and non-screen chargers, we invite you to view the picture below.

For comprehensive instructions on how to use any of our chargers effectively, whether they have a screen or not, please refer to the How-to Guide section of the EV Academy.

What is needed to use these chargers?

One important aspect of our AC chargers is the plug and cable setup. These chargers utilize the charging cable that comes with your EV. This cable is usually located in the trunk of your vehicle. This approach helps reduce clutter at the charging points and allows for easier maintenance and upgrades of the charging locations.

DC Chargers (Direct Current)

Allego offers cutting-edge DC Chargers (aka Fast and Ultra-Fast Chargers) for those who require quicker charging options.

Fast Chargers – 50 kW up to 149 kW

Our 50+ kW fast chargers dramatically reduce charging time for your electric vehicle (EV). Capable of adding approximately 150 kilometers of range in just 35 minutes, these chargers are a popular choice among European EV drivers. Designed for quick refills on longer journeys, they feature compatibility with CSS connectors, ensuring efficient and rapid charging.

How to recognize these chargers?

Allego’s Fast chargers are equipped with digital screens that provide interactive guidance and detailed charging information. These chargers are located in strategic, high traffic areas such as highway locations, hotels and shopping mall parking lots, making them easily accessible for drivers looking to quickly recharge.

What is needed to use these chargers?

Our 50+ kW fast chargers come with an attached charging cable, so there is no need to bring your own. Simply connect the provided cable to your EV and follow the instructions on the digital screen to start charging.

Ultra-Fast Charger – 300 kW Chargers

For those in need of the fastest charging solution, our 300 kW ultra-fast chargers deliver exceptional speed. These chargers can boost an EV’s charge from 10% to 80% in an average of just 20 minutes, making them ideal for minimizing downtime during road trips. Like our fast chargers, they utilize CCS plugs for optimal performance.

How to recognize these chargers?

Our 300 kW ultra-fast chargers stand out with their prominent digital displays and modern design. These are typically positioned in premium locations such as near highways, hotels, retail locations, shopping mall parking lots and in urban centers, where they can serve drivers who need quick top-ups to continue their journeys. The digital screens help guide the user through the charging process efficiently.

What is needed to use these chargers?

Similar to Allego’s 50+ kW fast chargers, the 300 kW ultra-fast chargers include a cable that is permanently attached to the charger. There’s no need to use a personal charging cable – simply plug in and the screen will guide you through the necessary steps to initiate the charging session.

Impact of Load Balancing on Charging Speeds

When multiple vehicles are charging at the same time at an Allego station, the overall charging speed can be influenced by something called load balancing.

Load balancing ensures that the available power is distributed efficiently among all connected vehicles. This means that if several vehicles are plugged in at the same time, the charger may allocated power based on demand and capacity, potentially reducing the charging speed for each individual vehicle.
